Chapter 26

The Rodeway Inn

Ronald, the maintenance man, walked into the front office of the Rodeway Inn, grinning like a Cheshire cat and holding a bag of McDonald’s and a cardboard tray of coffee.

“Morning, boss man,” Ronald greeted.

Henry glanced up from the phone, yawning. “Check out time is eleven o’clock, ma’am. All right. Good day.” He hung up and lifted his unkempt brows in surprise when Ronald dropped the McDonald’s bag in front of him. “For me?”

“Yep.” Ronald set one of the steaming cups of coffee down next to the bag.

Henry smiled. “What’s the occasion?”

“No reason. I’m just in a generous mood this morning.”

“Yeah?” He snatched the bag before Ronald could change his mind. “I still can’t afford to get you that raise this quarter, you know?”

“Yeah. Yeah.” He reached into his chest pocket for cigarettes. “You know that couple checked-in the honeymoon suite? The Kings?”

Henry’s eyebrows crashed together as he unwrapped a breakfast sandwich. “Yeah. The freaky couple with the handcuffs. Were you able to help them out?”

“Yep. And got a hundred bucks for my troubles. Took me maybe two minutes and that’s counting the chitchat before and after. I wish we could book more guests like that.”

“Book? We haven’t booked anyone here since Reagan was in office. Only riff-raff walk in here.”

“Huh. Those folks may be many things, but they are certainly not riff-raff. Man’s watch could probably pay my rent for at least two years—maybe three.”

Henry half listened while chomping on his breakfast.

“That fella’s shoes were a bit dirty, but they looked like they cost a mint. And then there was the money clip…”

Henry stopped chewing as if he finally got the direction of where Ronald’s train was going.

“What? He probably paid with a black American Express card or something?”

“Nope. Cash,” he mumbled. “Plus, it’s bad form for you to be telling me which of our guests you’ve marked to jack.”

“What are you talking about? They are the only guests we have checked in.”

“You’re purposely missing the point.”

A loud rumble caught their attention.

Crockett Brothers Towing rumbled into the empty parking lot with a hitched up black Mercedes.

“It looks like Mr. Money Bag’s ride is here,” Ronald commented with an unmistakable jealousy.

The tow truck parked and li’l Bubba strolled into the front office, grinning much too wide for that time in the morning.

“Hey, Henry. You got a fellah by the name of Quentin D. Hinton registered here?”

“No. But I have a Quentin King.” Henry frowned.

“Checked in last night?”

“Sure did. Got him booked in the honeymoon suite.” He sipped his coffee.

“Which room is that?”

“Room 189.”

“What do you think one of those go for?” Ronald kept his eyes on the car. “Fifty—sixty grand?”

“Probably north of seventy—eighty,” Bubba answered, heading back out of the door. “Sure is pretty, ain’t it?”

Henry whistled. “Big baller.”

Bubba laughed and exited the office.

Ronald turned back. “How long are they here for?”

“For as I know, they’re checking out today—though he paid enough for a week.”

“I guess some people are just lucky,” Ronald gripped before an image on the small television catty-corner from Henry caught his attention.
